The liminality of going off-grid...
Taking ourselves into liminal spaces, purposefully, can be powerful.
Right on the back of our home construction projects ending, and hosting my first Into the Woods live experience, my husband and I left for a couple’s-only off-grid “glamping” trip on the Olympic Peninsula. It was planned months and months ago, but it couldn’t have been better timing.
Not only were we in the woods, and off-grid, but we were on a cliff overlooking the Salish Sea (otherwise known as The Straight of Juan de Fuca - but methinks Juan was not the first person there), which made it even more liminal.
What I found fascinating was how readily I reached for my phone each time I sat down! Clearly, I had it there with me to take pictures, but without cell service, that’s about all I could use it for. But my habits made themselves starkly apparent - I would pick it up and turn it over and look for those little red notification bubbles mindlessly.
It took me some time to unwind myself gently from that digital entwinement, and what I found in the slow, deep breaths that came was… noticing. The sights (Alder, fern, a million shades of green, and darkness), the sounds (ocean crashing below, moisture dripping above, fire crackling), the smells (smoke, loam, plant life) but also, internally … my own heartbeat, my sense of being, my desires, deep joy.
I believe this is the opportunity liminality affords us. A chance to be set apart from the mundane and the regular to take stock, evaluate, and truly SEE. Leaning into the magic of life. Liminality can be unsettling, but embracing it can also reveal things in and to us that we would otherwise never experience.
What liminal spaces could you choose to step into this season that would afford you a different view of your life and perhaps offer up a perspective to you that you cannot get in your day-to-day?
What’s up with CA Jalonen?
Into the Woods Companion Guide Series to Liminal Life: Guidebook 1 on Embodiment & Regulation is set to come out on Amazon October 1st! I’m excited for what it will mean for my readers to deep dive into the healing practices that support the ideas in Liminal Life.
Into the Woods Live Experiences… the first beta experience went phenomenally! I was so touched by the immediate feedback:
“I feel calm, and curious.”
“I don’t think I’ve ever truly tasted a blueberry before.”
“Can I book all the spots for next month’s session for my friend group?”
The opportunity to step away and engage in healing, introspective ways is so valuable. This first event featured grounding meditations, forest therapy, guided journaling, and story work. Here’s a peek into that day’s experience… (and a follow up glimpse into the construction work I wrote about previously! Our space is complete!)
I can’t wait to share all this and more with the online community starting November! Registration for the first online beta group is open now for Nov 9th for only $25!

Carrie, that Into the Woods Live Experience! Just looking at those photos my soul felt breathable again. What a beautiful gift you have those participants. 🌿💚
I was so stuck this morning... just couldn't get started. You inspired me to go out in my backyard pollinator-garden in process to write my Morning Pages. I sometimes go off camping on my own... I'd be with you if I lived closer!
